What is ICO

Many of us have heard this word "ICO" but don't know what actually it means. The Long form of term ICO in 'Initial Coin Offering'. ICO means crowdfunding via the use of cryptocurrency, which can be a source of capital for startup companies. In an ICO,  a percentage of Upcoming cryptocurrency is sold to investors in exchange for Funds or other cryptocurrencies. ICO also know as Initial Public Coin Offering(IPCO)

History of ICO

First ICO was held by Mastercoin in July 2013. Ethereum raised funds with ICO in 2014, made 3,700 BTC($2.3 M) in its first 12 hours sale. Later in 2017, ICO becomes popular. About 18 websites hold their token sales before mid-year. A new web browser called Brave generated about $35 M in 30 seconds after they launched their first ICO in May. Kik a messaging app made about $100 M in September 2017.from that day ICO sales boomed in the market. ICO coin sales about $2.3 billion conducted during the year. in the last month, in November there were around 40 ICO sales in the market. This is more than the year 2016.

after watching out the history of ICO question comes to Mind is that ICOs are legal or scam? maybe! maybe not! The fact is they're New, unregulated assets in the market. there are two types of tokens in ICOs- Utility tokens and asset-backed tokens. Utility tokens such as Bitcoin may have value cause holder can exchange the token for good or service if he wants in future. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has reached a decision regarding ICOs which forced many projects and investors to examine the funding models of ICOs before Buying. For security, SEC has given Howey test for ICOs.

ICOs may fall outside existing regulations depending on nature of the project, or banned in some countries, such as China, South Korea. There are few restrictions on who can participate in ICO. And if you're taking money from investors, you have to be sure that you're giving returns. A fundamental issue with token sales is that most of them raise money from global pool investors for pre-product. This makes the investment risk.
